Here, is the final. Attempted some Dave Cooper inspired grass. Had  a lot of fun painting this.

I wanted to play up the legend of this character more then the real life figure, so tried to emphasize the cheery wilderness adventurer.

Napoleon. 

The original card designs form my magicians image.

I have been working on this image off and on for a long time and finally wrapped it up. Months back I read Michael Chabon’s book “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” and really loved a short passage in the book describing a small boys vision of what the Hofzinser Club, a Magicians club, looked like. Based on that description I did and image of a young magician wandering through the club for the first time. Here is the quote:

“Thomas’ own mind was filled  with Byzantine, houris-hand-candied-figs visions of men in cutaway coats and pasha pants walking around inside the beetle-browned, half-timbered hotel on Stupartska with their upper torsos separated from their lower, summoning leopards and lyrebirds out of the air.”
